About this Woodrow's whisky
This bold and characterful release from Woodrow's of Edinburgh puts the spotlight firmly on Croftengea (the heavily peated style produced at Loch Lomond) and shows just how well it can carry rich, wine-led cask influence without losing its smoky identity.
Distilled in March 2016 and bottled in May 2025 at 9 years old, this single malt forms part of the Warehouse Reserve range, where inventive cask work and textural depth are very much the point. After its initial maturation, the whisky was transferred into a combination of American and European oak bloodtubs seasoned with Oloroso and PX sherry, before being vatted back together. Bloodtubs, with their high surface-area-to-liquid ratio, intensify wood interaction quickly, amplifying richness, spice, and sweetness while allowing Croftengea’s earthy peat to remain front and centre.
On the nose, the peat announces itself in a more rugged register: leather, pine resin, and bonfire smoke are balanced by dark berries, blackberries in particular, adding a brooding fruitiness beneath the smoke. The palate is dense and mouth-coating, with earthy charcoal, coffee grounds, and peat smoke set against sweeter notes of raisins, black cherries, and redcurrant jam. The sherry influence is deep and savoury rather than overtly sweet, complementing the distillery character rather than masking it.
The finish is long and resonant, with lingering smoke softened by toasted almonds and warming allspice, leaving a dry, spiced smokiness that invites another sip.
Bottled at natural cask strength (58.0% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a confident, unapologetic Croftengea: smoky, earthy, and richly fruited in equal measure. Limited to just 222 bottles, it will particularly appeal to fans of peated whisky who enjoy complexity, texture, and thoughtful sherry influence rather than sweetness alone.
