About this Woodrow's whisky

Woodrow’s of Edinburgh present this 14-year-old Burnside, distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2025 after a long finish in a first fill tawny port hogshead. “Burnside” is the name traditionally given to a tea-spooned Balvenie (a single malt with just a drop of another distillery’s whisky added, allowing it to be bottled without the Balvenie name). This makes every Burnside release a fascinating insight into one of Speyside’s most admired spirit styles.

After initial maturation in a refill hogshead, this whisky spent three years finishing in a first fill tawny port cask, adding a layer of soft red fruit sweetness to the honeyed and malty base spirit. Bottled at 52% ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration, it’s a beautifully composed Speyside dram that balances elegance and indulgence.

The nose opens with caramel, white chocolate, and fresh strawberries. The palate is velvety and layered: toffee, apples, and strawberry tart mingle with crème brûlée, toasted almonds, and a touch of marzipan, lifted by a gentle citrus zest. The finish is medium in length, leaving behind white pepper warmth, soft red fruits, and a creamy sweetness.

A refined and flavourful example of how a tawny port finish can enhance an already sophisticated Speyside malt, this Burnside offers a glimpse of Balvenie’s craftsmanship with a playful twist.

Woody Tan

Originally from Hong Kong, Woody Tan has lived in Scotland since 2011. He studied an MSc in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University, and then went into the cask trade and warehouse keeping. While looking after casks, he started to discover gems that he felt had to be shared with fellow whisky lovers. He bottles these special casks under his Woodrow’s of Edinburgh label.

Woody has an excellent palate, and a knack for uncovering really flavoursome casks. He’s also a wizard when it comes to cask experiments, and has released some interesting cask-finished whiskies.
