Craigellachie 16 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Orchard fruits such as apples, pears along with a more concentrated sweetness like syrup from tinned fruit.
Palate: The taste neat continues the sweet theme with baked apple turnover that’s been coated with slightly burnt crystalised sugar on the crust, the syrup sweetness continues to prevail. With water more cereal notes develop, like walking through a barley and fruit farm. Images of Icing covered Victoria sponge come to mind as well. On the reduced palate it simply bursts with juicy fruits and sweetness with peaches joining in the array of flavours.
About this Tri Carragh whisky
Tri Carragh presents this beautifully expressive Craigellachie 16 Year Old, distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2025 from a single bourbon barrel, yielding just 125 bottles. Known for its muscular Speyside spirit, Craigellachie stands apart from its neighbours thanks to its traditional use of worm tub condensers, which add weight, waxiness, and a distinctive meaty texture to the whisky.
This single cask captures that trademark depth while letting the bourbon cask’s natural sweetness and fruit character shine through. Bottled at cask strength (54.4%), with natural colour and no chill filtration, it’s a pure expression of Craigellachie’s bold and complex house style.
The nose offers orchard fruits (crisp apples, ripe pears) wrapped in syrupy sweetness reminiscent of tinned fruit. The palate continues that theme, with flavours of baked apple turnover glazed with caramelised sugar and a silky sweetness running throughout. Adding a little water opens up cereal notes, conjuring the image of walking through a barley field at harvest. On the reduced palate, icing-covered Victoria sponge and juicy peaches join the mix, creating a wonderfully indulgent and fruit-forward dram.
This release is Craigellachie in full bloom; robust yet elegant, richly textured yet bursting with bright fruit and vanilla sweetness.
