Chain Pier 6 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and youthful, with an immediate burst of dark berries, raisin syrup, and black cherry compote. The PX maturation brings layers of treacle, fig, and milk chocolate, while the red wine octave adds a brighter edge of raspberry and redcurrant. Beneath the sweetness sits warming oak spice, roasted coffee beans, and a touch of candied orange peel.
Palate: Full-flavoured and intense, delivering sticky dates, plum jam, and dark toffee alongside waves of sweet malt and chocolate-coated raisins. The octave finish lifts the whisky with notes of red fruits and gentle tannic dryness, balancing the richness of the PX cask. At cask strength, the palate carries plenty of warming spice—cinnamon, clove, and black pepper—alongside a youthful energy and slightly earthy edge.
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering dried fruits, cocoa, and sweet oak spice. Notes of berry syrup, espresso, and toasted nuts remain alongside a final drying grip from the wine cask influence.
About this Tri Carragh whisky
This Chain Pier 6 Year Old from Tri Carragh is a bold, modern Lowland single malt that embraces active cask maturation to create a whisky of remarkable intensity despite its youthful age.
Chain Pier Distillery was set up in 2019 as an experimental distillery and a pre-cursor to the new Bonnington Distillery in Edinburgh. It was the first time whisky had been distilled in the City of Edinburgh for over 100 years. This cask is rare. And when we say rare, we mean extremely rare. The distillery only created 39 casks before it was shut down. This is from cask #32, which was a 1st Fill PX Barrique. For this particular release - Tri Carragh have finished a small amount in a 2nd Fill, Ex-peated Red Wine Octave adding superb layers of flavour.
Chain Pier’s youthful spirit stands up impressively well to this treatment, retaining energy and structure beneath the cask influence. The PX maturation contributes dense notes of dried fruit, treacle, chocolate, and dark sweetness, while the red wine octave lifts the profile with fresher berry tones and a slightly drier finish.
Bottled at cask strength (58.9% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that fully embraces modern, active maturation while retaining enough balance to avoid excess. With an outturn of just 86 bottles, it’s a highly limited release aimed squarely at drinkers who enjoy powerful, cask-led whiskies with plenty of richness and intensity.
A dark, decadent, and contemporary Lowland malt - youthful, energetic, and packed with flavour.
