About this Little Brown Dog release

A very special calvados. It's fully white port matured, pays d’auge so its double pot distilled rather than column distilled at the idyllic Christian Drouin distillery in Normandy. And it’s just wonderful. The pot distillation creates a richer, heavier distillate that preserves more apple oomph. That’s almost certainly the correct technical term.

It must be a labour of love to bring this cask home to Scotland, a not inexpensive or stress-free experience. But well worth it. Good age to this, very interesting wood type and an approachable ABV (although it is natural cask strength). An exciting calvados unicorn and one which Andrew and Chris are very excited to share.

The label is the wing of a Hawker Typhoon with D-day invasion stripes. Little Brown Dog owes a lot of its existence to Chris’s annual visits to Normandy and the chaps are both abnormally well-read on the subject, so it seemed appropriate to make a wee nod to this.

Meet The Founders

Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid

Little Brown Dog Spirits was founded by Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid. They run an independent bottler and micro-distillery based in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

They take their name from Andrew’s beloved dog, whose nickname was the little brown dog. She followed him everywhere on all his distillery visits and was his constant companion. She passed away in 2022 aged 15 but lives on in spirit. Two more little brown dogs, Winnie and Peedie joined the team in 2020 and 2023.

Chris and Andrew started Little Brown Dog in 2018. Based on Chris’s farm they combine a passion for their surrounding area with in-depth knowledge (read intense geekery!) of distilling and cask maturation.
