About this Little Brown Dog release
This Speyside Distillery 16 Year Old from Little Brown Dog leans into both the charm and the ambiguity of its origin - a whisky that playfully acknowledges the confusion around its name while delivering a distinctive and characterful dram.
Distilled on 25 June 2009 and bottled on 13 February 2026, this single malt was matured in a single sherry hogshead, developing a bright, expressive profile over 16 years. The Speyside Distillery in Kingussie has long been something of an outlier - lesser known than many of its neighbours, and currently in transition, with the original site dismantled and a new chapter under construction. Releases like this offer a snapshot of that legacy, capturing spirit from a distillery that feels both historic and quietly elusive.
The maturation in sherry wood has been handled with restraint. Rather than heavy, dense sweetness, the cask brings a more lifted, slightly unconventional profile, one that complements the spirit’s natural brightness and adds intrigue rather than weight. This is very much in keeping with Little Brown Dog’s style: character-first, slightly offbeat, and always engaging.
On the nose, the whisky opens with pomegranate and paprika, alongside an unexpected waxy note reminiscent of a fresh box of crayons; playful, but also indicative of underlying texture. The palate continues in that slightly unconventional vein, with redcurrants and a subtle vegetal edge, before opening into a more mineral, wine-like character that brings to mind Sancerre. The finish is where it really stands out, with liquorice (lakrids) and a nostalgic burst of fizzing candy adding lift and energy to the final moments.
Bottled at cask strength (54.2% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that embraces individuality. With an outturn of 317 bottles, it offers something a little different: a Speyside malt that steps outside the expected profile and rewards drinkers who enjoy complexity, curiosity, and a touch of personality in their dram.
