About this Little Brown Dog release

Grain whisky works best once it’s had a good few years resting in refill wood. That length of time depends on the cask and the distillate but after about 25 years most grains switch on.

Because of the need for lengthy maturation times it usually means refill wood works best, allows that balance over an expended period without the wood dominating the beautifully oxidised and reduced spirit.

Andrew and Chris at Little Brown Dog created this small batch whisky from 5 refill bourbon barrels. When they were filled on the same day back in 1992 they’d have had 200 litres each in them. Fast forward to 2025 and after 25 years of evaporation and angles share there was less than 40 litres in some of these casks! All 5 were great, but after briefly contemplating 5 tiny single cask releases, Andrew and Chris did the sensible thing and vatted them together.

The North British Distillery is a big ole beastie of a distillery, producing 73,000,000 litres of pure alcohol a year from its three Coffey stills, that’s a lot, and quite ironic that there was so little of it in these casks…

Meet The Founders

Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid

Little Brown Dog Spirits was founded by Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid. They run an independent bottler and micro-distillery based in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

They take their name from Andrew’s beloved dog, whose nickname was the little brown dog. She followed him everywhere on all his distillery visits and was his constant companion. She passed away in 2022 aged 15 but lives on in spirit. Two more little brown dogs, Winnie and Peedie joined the team in 2020 and 2023.

Chris and Andrew started Little Brown Dog in 2018. Based on Chris’s farm they combine a passion for their surrounding area with in-depth knowledge (read intense geekery!) of distilling and cask maturation.
