About this Little Brown Dog whisky

This Caol Ila 13 Year Old from Little Brown Dog is a beautifully poised Islay single malt that captures the distillery’s signature balance of smoke, freshness, and coastal character. Distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2026, just shy of its 14th birthday, it represents the style many enthusiasts seek from Caol Ila at this age: bright, precise, and elegantly peated.

Matured in a single refill sherry butt, this whisky benefits from a more restrained wood influence. Refill casks allow the spirit to evolve gently, adding subtle depth and oxidation without overwhelming the distillery character. In this case, the result is a whisky that feels composed and expressive, where peat, salt, and texture remain firmly in the foreground.

Caol Ila is widely regarded as one of Islay’s most versatile distillates, capable of handling a wide range of cask styles. Here, Little Brown Dog have opted for a lighter touch, preserving that clean, maritime peat profile while allowing the whisky to develop an elegant, slightly savoury complexity over time.

On the nose, the whisky opens with an understated, almost industrial purity - unscented candles, malt barns, and a driftwood bonfire by the shore. The palate builds in texture and intrigue, moving into roasted almonds, a saline umami note reminiscent of sea urchin, and even a briny, olive-led character akin to a dirty martini. The finish is bright and coastal, with gorse, salt, and lively peat smoke carrying through in a long, refreshing fade.

Bottled at cask strength (55.7% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that rewards attention: structured, savoury, and quietly complex. With an outturn of 327 bottles, it’s a refined and highly drinkable Islay malt that leans into balance rather than intensity, and showcases Caol Ila at its most elegant.

Meet The Founders

Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid

Little Brown Dog Spirits was founded by Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid. They run an independent bottler and micro-distillery based in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

They take their name from Andrew’s beloved dog, whose nickname was the little brown dog. She followed him everywhere on all his distillery visits and was his constant companion. She passed away in 2022 aged 15 but lives on in spirit. Two more little brown dogs, Winnie and Peedie joined the team in 2020 and 2023.

Chris and Andrew started Little Brown Dog in 2018. Based on Chris’s farm they combine a passion for their surrounding area with in-depth knowledge (read intense geekery!) of distilling and cask maturation.
