Auchroisk 12 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh and vibrant, with notes of vanilla cream, honeyed cereal, and ripe orchard fruits. Green apple, pear drops, and lemon zest are balanced by soft floral aromas and a gentle malt sweetness. Subtle oak influence brings hints of toasted coconut, white chocolate, and a touch of warming spice beneath the brighter fruit notes.
Palate: Smooth and approachable, offering flavours of creamy vanilla fudge, malted biscuits, and baked apples. The bourbon cask adds layers of caramel and sweet oak, while Auchroisk’s spirit character contributes a clean, slightly grassy freshness that keeps the whisky lively and balanced. Mid-palate reveals notes of citrus oils, almond pastry, and soft peppery spice.
Finish: Medium length, clean and warming, with lingering honeyed malt, vanilla pod, and gentle oak spice. A final note of citrus peel and sweet cereal remains on the palate.
Overall: An elegant bourbon-matured Auchroisk that highlights the distillery’s lighter, fruit-driven character. The cask influence is supportive rather than dominant, creating a well-balanced Speyside single malt with plenty of freshness, sweetness, and easy-drinking charm.
About This GreatDrams Whisky
It is incredibly rare to find a bottle of whisky from this fine distillery. They have only had a handful of limited releases over the years. Pronounced ‘arr-thrusk’, the Auchroisk Distillery uses fast mashing, fermentation and boiling early in the process. This creates a heavy character within their new make spirit which, through maturation will develop into a whisky full of honey and cereal notes. An excellent find by GreatDrams.
Curiously, the first Auchroisk official bottling, in 1986, was the first ‘finished whisky'. They took a 10 Year Old ex-bourbon whisky and placed it into sherry casks for two years. Auchroisk is the most northerly distillery in Speyside and produces around 6 million litres of spirit a year, with virtually all of it going into blended Scotch whiskies the world over.
