Knockdhu 8 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and warming, with layers of dried fruits, toasted nuts, and dark toffee immediately apparent. Raisins, orange peel, and fig jam sit alongside notes of polished oak and milk chocolate, while the youthful Knockdhu spirit contributes a lively freshness beneath the sherry influence. Gentle spice develops in the glass, bringing cinnamon, clove, and a slightly resinous note reminiscent of antique furniture polish.
Palate: Smooth and full-bodied, delivering flavours of treacle, baked fruits, and sherried malt. The first fill Oloroso cask brings plenty of richness, with notes of walnut cake, dark caramel, and cocoa balanced by brighter touches of red apple and candied citrus peel. Mid-palate reveals warming oak spice and a faint coffee bitterness that adds structure without overwhelming the sweeter character.
Finish: Medium to long, warming and gently drying, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, sweet spice, and toasted nuts. Dried fruit sweetness gradually fades into soft oak tannins and a touch of leathery richness.
Overall: A well-balanced sherried Knockdhu that combines youthful vibrancy with the depth and richness of an active first fill Oloroso hogshead. Approachable yet characterful, with plenty of classic Speyside sweetness wrapped in warming sherry influence.
About This GreatDrams whisky
This Knockdhu 8 Year Old has been matured wholly in one single First Fill Oloroso Hogshead. This has given it not only an excellent colour, but also a big, meaty flavour profile. It's as fruity as it is spicy, as warming as it is smooth and as gorgeous as any sherry cask can be. A special drop from GreatDrams!
The Knockdhu Distillery is a curious juxtaposition of old and new; stainless steel Lauter tuns, wooden washbacks and the use of worm tubs as condensers. Knockdhu, one of the hidden gems of Speyside, was actually shut down between 1983 and 1988 during the last whisky crash, but is now producing again.
