Nose: Vanilla buttercream and toffee cups sit alongside redcurrant jelly, whilst cracked walnuts and gingerbread men join milk chocolate.

This Mortlach 16 Year Old from Gleann Mór Spirits joins the Rare Find range as a rich and full-bodied Speyside single malt, pairing Mortlach’s famously weighty spirit with the deep fruit, chocolate and spice of first fill European oak Oloroso sherry.

Distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2026, this single cask release was finished in a first fill European oak Oloroso sherry hogshead (cask #81). It is a natural combination for Mortlach: the active sherry cask builds upon the whisky’s inherent richness, bringing darker fruit and warming spice while allowing the distillery’s substantial texture and savoury depth to remain at the heart of the dram.

Produced at Mortlach Distillery, the spirit has long been associated with a particularly robust and characterful style. Here, 16 years of maturation have given that muscular character time to develop, while the Oloroso finish introduces another layer of indulgence without overwhelming the underlying whisky.

The nose opens generously with vanilla buttercream and soft toffee cups, followed by the sharper fruitiness of redcurrant jelly. Cracked walnuts bring a drier, nuttier dimension before gingerbread and milk chocolate emerge, creating an inviting combination of sweetness, spice and richness.

On the palate, the whisky is immediately mouth-coating. Cinnamon and ginger-spiced plums lead into balsamic strawberries, polished oak and a persistent oily texture. Orange oils provide brightness through the mid-palate, balanced by biscuit crumb and increasingly dry, dusty oak. The sherry influence feels deeply integrated, complementing Mortlach’s weight rather than simply adding sweetness.
