Loch Lomond 9 Year Old Tasting Notes
Colour: Fresh honey.
Nose: A slightly restrained fruity note in this youthful Loch Lomond, but that is far from the end of the story. It’s floral which is unexpected for a Loch Lomond. Violets, I think. Slightly charred oakiness and totally sumptuous.
Palate: The floral note doesn’t carry through, but this is a fragrant, warming, full-bodied dram, which is unashamedly bold. A very dry Bourbon twang proving that not every Bourbon is sweet vanilla. Soft fruit with toasted nuts drizzled with a dash of cinnamon and a grilled banana. A really sophisticated dram.
Finish: A medium finish at first but as it phases out suddenly here is a resurgence. This is going to take a while!
About this Dram Mor whisky
This Loch Lomond 9 Year Old from Dràm Mòr is a confident and characterful Highland single malt that highlights a less commonly seen side of American oak maturation. Distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2025, the whisky was finished in a first fill Maker’s Mark bourbon barrel (cask #4) and released at cask strength (57.5%), with natural colour and no chill filtration. Just 215 bottles were produced.
Loch Lomond’s unique distillation setup allows the distillery to dial in a wide range of spirit styles, and that flexibility shines here. Rather than leaning into the overt sweetness often associated with bourbon casks, this Maker’s Mark barrel brings a drier, more structured influence, allowing the spirit’s complexity to take centre stage.
On the nose, the whisky opens with a restrained fruitiness that slowly gives way to something more intriguing: unexpected floral notes, evocative of violets, alongside gently charred oak. It’s an elegant and surprisingly refined introduction for such a young malt.
The palate is bold, warming and full-bodied, with the floral notes stepping aside in favour of a more savoury bourbon profile. This is a whisky that shows that not all bourbon casks deliver vanilla-led sweetness. Instead, expect soft orchard fruit, toasted nuts, cinnamon spice, and a beautifully judged note of grilled banana, all wrapped in a dry, confident structure that feels sophisticated and assured.
The finish initially appears medium in length, but just as it seems to fade, it resurges, unfurling layers of oak spice and warmth that linger far longer than expected. This is a striking and thoughtful dram that rewards patience, offering depth, balance and a distinctly grown-up bourbon cask character.
