Loch Lomond 9 Year Old Tasting Notes
Colour: Rich sauternes wine
Nose: Sumptuous. Bakewell tart springs to mind. Gentle almond, butter pastry and that hint of raspberry jam, lychee and white pepper… perfect.
Palate: ...and we are not being lied to by the nose. Sumptuous was the right word. That fresh-baked treat is still there, but this time in liquid form. Even the warmth isn’t spicy, but more of a straight-from-the-oven feel to things. Loads of yellow fruit, fresh and dried, almond, yellow pear and white pepper.
Finish: A medium length finish as all the flavour we have just enjoyed comes together in a mellow curtain call. Fabulous!
About this Dram Mor whisky
This Loch Lomond 9 Year Old from Dràm Mòr is a wonderfully expressive young Highland single malt that showcases both the versatility of the distillery and the impact of high-quality American oak. Distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2025, the whisky was finished in a first fill Four Roses bourbon barrel (cask #3) and released at cask strength (55.9%), with natural colour and no chill filtration. The outturn is limited to 311 bottles.
Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s most technically flexible distilleries, able to produce a wide range of spirit styles thanks to its unique still design and adjustable distillation regimes. This adaptability makes it an ideal canvas for cask-led maturation, and in this case, the influence of a first fill Four Roses barrel brings a rich, dessert-like character while still allowing the distillery’s fruit-forward spirit to shine.
The nose is immediately sumptuous and indulgent, evoking Bakewell tart with notes of almond, buttery pastry and raspberry jam, alongside flashes of lychee and white pepper. On the palate, the whisky fully delivers on that promise, transforming those bakery notes into a warm, comforting liquid form. Layers of yellow fruits, pear, almond and gentle spice unfold with impressive balance, the alcohol providing warmth rather than heat.
The finish is medium in length and beautifully rounded, drawing together the fruit, pastry and spice notes into a mellow, satisfying conclusion. This is a polished and characterful young malt that feels far more mature than its age suggests, and a fine example of how thoughtful cask selection can elevate Loch Lomond’s distinctive spirit.
