About this Brave New Spirits whisky
This Speyside single malt forms part of the Cask Masters range from Brave New Spirits, a series focused on showcasing well-chosen casks that enhance, rather than overwhelm, a distillery’s natural character.
Distilled on 1 April 2013 and bottled on 30 August 2025, this 12-year-old Auchroisk has been matured in a first fill Oloroso sherry barrique (cask 808686). Auchroisk is a distillery more often encountered behind the scenes in blends, making single malt releases like this especially appealing. Its spirit is typically clean, lightly fruity, and quietly malty - an excellent canvas for thoughtful sherry maturation.
The use of a barrique, smaller than a traditional sherry butt or hogshead, increases wood contact and accelerates interaction between spirit and cask. In this case, the first fill Oloroso wood brings structure, richness, and gentle spice, while still allowing Auchroisk’s fresh Speyside core to shine through. Expect a balance of dried fruit, toasted oak, and subtle sweetness, framed by the distillery’s naturally soft and composed profile.
Bottled at 51.4% ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration, this release retains texture and depth without feeling overly heavy. With an outturn of 334 bottles, it’s a well-judged sherried Speyside that offers both approachability and quiet complexity - a fine example of how considered cask selection can elevate an understated distillery.
