Laphroaig 22 Year Old Tasting Notes

Bonfire smoke, cracked pepper, and waves of creamy vanilla.

About this Càrn Mòr whisky

This Laphroaig 22 Year Old from Morrison Distillers was released as part of the prestigious Càrn Mòr Celebration Of The Cask series, showcasing the remarkable depth and complexity that long maturation can bring to one of Islay’s most iconic distilleries.

Distilled in 2004 and bottled in 2026, this single malt spent over two decades maturing in a single bourbon barrel. While Laphroaig is renowned for its bold peat smoke, medicinal notes, and maritime character, extended bourbon cask maturation often reveals a softer, more elegant side of the spirit. The oak gradually integrates with the whisky over time, introducing layers of vanilla, cream, and spice while allowing the distillery’s unmistakable smoky identity to remain intact.

Few distilleries reward long ageing quite like Laphroaig Distillery. As the years pass, the intense peat becomes more refined and harmonious, evolving from youthful intensity into something deeper, richer, and more nuanced.

The nose opens with classic bonfire smoke, immediately recognisable as Laphroaig, accompanied by cracked black pepper and a growing wave of creamy vanilla sweetness from the bourbon barrel. On the palate, the interplay between smoke and oak is beautifully balanced, with rich vanilla, soft spice, and mature peat creating a whisky of impressive depth and texture. The peat remains present throughout but has become polished and integrated, supporting rather than dominating the flavour profile.

The finish is long, warming, and elegant, carrying lingering smoke, sweet oak, gentle spice, and creamy vanilla far beyond the final sip.

Bottled at cask strength (54.9% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that captures both the power and refinement of mature Islay malt. With an outturn of just 130 bottles, it is a highly limited release and a superb example of long-aged bourbon-matured Laphroaig.

A beautifully mature Islay whisky where elegant peat smoke, creamy vanilla, and subtle spice combine in perfect balance.

Meet the family

The Morrisons

The Morrison's are one of the oldest whisky families in Scotland. The dynasty started in the 18th century when they were grocers. Over the centuries since, they have grown into whisky brokers, blenders, and distillers. Today they are known as Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers and are led by Jamie and Brian Morrison.

Jamie and Brian release whiskies under three brands. Old Perth is their sherried range, and Mac-Talla is their Islay range, and then Carn Mor releases small batch whiskies from a range of distilleries.
