Scotch Tasting Notes

Nose: Toasted sesame seeds, hints of caramel and honey, earthy smoke.

Palate: Enjoyably savoury, with notes of ham, charcoal and green olive. Brown sugar gives it a sweet edge.

Finish: Frazzles, coffee bean and orange.

Background to Ledaig whisky

Located on the Isle of Mull, this is a distillery with two names, and two stories. Originally founded as Ledaig Distillery in 1798 by a chap called John Sinclairl. It had a successful few decades initially, but struggled between 1837 and 1930 - swapping hands multiple times, and spending periods of time mothballed and silent.

In the mid 20th century it was bought by a motley crew of a Liverpool shipping company, Sherry producer and other overseas parties. They renovated the distillery and rebranded it Tobermory. But, despite their efforts, another period of silence followed and parts of the distillery were given over to holiday lets - and even cheese stores. Mmm, whisky and cheese!

In 1993 the current owners Burn Stewart Distillers arrived at the distillery and the past three-odd decades have been bright. They operate two brands: Tobermory and Ledaig. Today, Tobermory is used as both the main distillery name and a brand name for their unpeated whisky, while Ledaig is used for their peated whisky - indeed, heavily peated whisky. While that naming convention is clear today, it's worth remembering that for old casks the names were in fact reversed: so Ledaig casks that are a couple of decades old may or may not be peated, depending on the convention used. But, either way, their whisky is delicious!
