Firkin 49 Tasting Notes

Official tasting notes:

This is a cracker. It’s long, rounded and jam-packed with creamy butterscotch toffee. It has crisp malt and some fruit, oak that hangs around, with a little cinnamon and sweet biscuit.

Ed's review:

Colour: Natural colour, light to medium amber. Coats the sides of my copita, with legs that continue to cling on.

Nose: Gentle and welcoming. Soft peach skins, ripened in the sun on the oak kitchen table. Hazelnuts and peanuts - natural, not salted. A touch of sweetness from vanilla fudge.

Palate: Medium to full mouthfeel. Fruit and nut milk chocolate, with raisins and more hazelnuts. Sticky figs and ripe plums. A touch of spice adds gentle warmth.

Finish: Medium to long finish. The fruit and nut chocolate continues. The spice lingers, leaving one's palate ready for another dram.

About Firkin 49 Tullibardine 2012 Whisky

Tullibardine Distillery was founded in 1949, the same year as Mike Collings, the Firkin Founder. The distillery is at the gateway to the Highlands, close by the Ochil Hills about 50 miles north-west of Edinburgh.

To make this Firkin whisky, Firkin Whisky Company took a 2012 Tullibardine matured in a first fill Bourbon barrel, which is a pretty good dram. But with the magic of two types of sherry and their double wood custom casks, they transformed it into an outstanding whisky.

The 50/50 combination of Amontillado and Oloroso sherries gives you a unique profile. It’s creamy, rounded and nutty, with elements of dried fruit

It’s so soft and nutty; Firkin 49 single malt is extraordinary Firkin whisky.

Meet the Founder

Mike Collings

Mike Collings could have retired with an incredible track record in whisky. He had created Johnnie Walker Blue & Green Labels, The Classic Malts, Rare Malts, Distillers Edition, Flora & Fauna series, Cardhu and Royal Lochnagar. That’s pretty good as far as CVs go.

He’s been working in whisky for 40 years. You couldn’t blame him for packing it in and putting his feet up. That would have been the sensible thing to do. But Mike is many things. Sensible isn’t one of them. Mike stirs the pot. He thinks about things differently and always asks: ‘what if …’

So, he found himself enjoying a few drams in a Tokyo bar thinking: what if I created a whisky that was unique on the single cask single malt market.

So he did. And it's Firkin awesome whisky.
