Interview with Wemyss
In April we went to Whisky Live in London at the Honourable Artillery Company (large guns and high proof spirits seems an interesting combination, but anyway). While we were there, we were able to talk with Jacqueline from Wemyss. She explained what Wemyss malts are all about, and talked us through Spice King and The Hive.
There are two bottlings of the Spice King, we tried the Batch Strength (obviously), which comes bottled at 56% abv and is a limited edition run of only 6,000.
Nose: big, powerful pepper with hints of other spice and fruit.
Palate: the name gives it away - lots of spice and pepper, with a notes of oak and barley.
Finish: a nice rich finish which has pleasing echoes of coconut.
The Hive is a 12 year old blended malt, based on Speyside whisky. It makes for a very good desert island dram (wherever your desert island).
Nose: sweet scent with notes of honey, vanilla, sticky apples, and dried fruits.
Palate: again, Wemyss like to their whiskies to do what they say on the tin, so there's lots of honey, and notes of toast and sweet spices to go with it.
Finish: honey and nutmeg finish off this quaffable dram.
